Update User Attributes

Update User Attributes

Summary / TL:DR: This article outlines the steps for updating customer attributes in Blueshift using the bulk upload option provided in the Blueshift UI.

Currently New Market Group is sending in requests on a regular basis to add a custom attribute to a customer profile in Blueshift. These custom attributes are used for their cart abandons for customers who have opted out already.

What You’ll Need

  1. Customer Email Address

If this is a ticket from New Market Group, they provide a CSV with the email addresses that need the attribute.

2. Custom Attribute

3. Blueshift Instance

If this is not outlined in the ticket, make sure to ask the client what Blueshift Instance this needs upload needs to be done on.

4. CSV Template

Configure the CSV Template

You can use the template at the end of this section for bulk uploads to Blueshift.

These steps are under the assumption that a list of email addresses has been provided by the client.

  1. Copy the email addresses from the provided list and paste them into the email column of the CSV template

  2. Use the Custom Attribute provided by the client as the Header for column 2

  3. Type FALSE as the value for the custom attribute

test2@domain.com

4. Save the file somewhere you can find it

Make sure the file is still in CSV format when saving

Uploading to Blueshift

If this is not outlined in the ticket, make sure to ask the client what Blueshift Instance this needs upload needs to be done on.

  1. Navigate to the correct Blueshift instance

  2. From the menu on the left-hand side select Customer Data > Attributes

  3. Click ‘+ CUSTOMERS’ in to top right-hand corner

  4. Select ‘Upload CSV’ from the drop-down

5. From the ‘Customer CSV upload’ screen choose the file you wish to upload you are going to

1. Choose the file to upload

2. make sure that Blueshift recognizes the columns

If the attribute column is not recognized, it is likely that the custom attribute has not been setup yet but the client. They will need to do this before you can complete the upload.

3. Import Customers

You will receive an upload status email from Blueshift once the import is complete. Within the status email there is a link to view any failed rows. The failed rows are typically errors with the email address (i.e. test@domain.coom, test@domain.c, etc). If there are any failed rows, inform the client and ask if they would like to have those uploaded again once they are corrected.

Spot Check

Once the upload is complete, it is a good idea to spot check a few accounts to make sure the custom attribute is on the account.

  1. From the upload CSV file you created, copy a customers email address

  2. Search for that email address in the Blueshift instance where you did the upload

  3. In the customers profile under ‘Overview' > ‘Custom Attributes’, look for the attribute that was added to the profile and verify that it is ‘FALSE’

Wrap up

You should now be able to add a custom attribute to a customers profile in Blueshift using the bulk upload option provided in the Blueshift UI.
