Apps

  • Qlik Sense apps are similar to dashboards. They contain tables and visualizations which present curated data on different subjects, allowing users to analyze performance and make informed business decisions.

Sheets

  • Sheets in Qlik Sense allow us to breakout and focus on different concepts within one overall subject. Users can make selections and interact with the tables and visuals presented in each tab.

  • All available sheets within an app will be housed on the app overview page.

Navigation Basics

  • Once you select a sheet you will be able to scroll back and forth between all the sheets within the app by selecting the arrows on the top right-hand corner of the sheet. Selections will hold across sheets.

  • If you are in a sheet and you would like to get back to the app overview, select the ellipsis (3 dots) and select ‘app overview.’ To go back to the Qlik hub, Hit the ‘Qlik’ logo on the top left.

Selections

  • Selections allow you to filter the information shown within the sheets of an app.

  • When you make a selection, all associated tables and visualizations are updated immediately to reflect the selection.

  • Just like QlikView:

    • Selections hold and limit data across sheets

    • What you select turns green in the selections pane

    • Applicable options based on your previous selections will turn white

    • Any options that don’t apply based on your other selections will turn grey

    • You can select all or exclude values

      • These options are accessible via the ellipsis on the top left-hand corner of the selection pane

      • Select possible will select ALL applicable values.

      • Select excluded will select everything except the value you have selected

        • To use select excluded, make a value selection first

  • You can confirm or abandon your selections within in the selection pane. To confirm select the green checkmark icon and to abandon select the red X icon. You can also simply click out of the selection pane.

  • There will generally be pre-set selections options on the side/top of each Qlik Sense sheet. If you do not see the option you want, don’t fret. Simply click on this symbol Picture9.png on the top right-hand side of the sheet and you will see additional options or ‘app dimensions’. You can scroll through or search available dimensions and make any desired selections. You can also select the ‘show fields’ box to view, search and filter by all available selections.

  • Also please note that there may be default selections already made when you open a given app or sheet. These will be shown as ‘breadcrumbs’ along the top. Please review these and make any necessary adjustments (removing or changing) before reviewing your data.

  • Once you are done, simply click on Picture9.png again on the top right-hand side. Your custom selections will appear on the top of the sheet. To remove these selections, select the ‘x’.

  • Replacing the ‘swirly arrow’ - There is no ‘swirly arrow’ or cyclic view in Qlik Sense (a favorite from the QlikView days)

  • However, pivot tables and container objects fulfill a similar function as they allow you to breakdown your data by different dimensions.

Pivot tables

  • Allow you to view breakdowns by multiple dimensions, vs. the swirly arrow where you could only select one dimension at a time.

  • In the left-hand corner of the pivot table, you will see the available dimensions. You can rearrange these dimensions as desired and then expand and collapse each dimension via the + and – symbols along the left-hand side.

Container Objects

  • Allows us to present data organized by different dimensions on different ‘tabs’ within one visualization/object

  • Users can simply click on the tab header of the desired dimension to get the information

Exporting to Excel

  • While Qlik Sense allows you to work with and analyze your data within the platform through BI created charts and visualizations that you can also customize, if you find yourself in a situation where you need the data in excel you can easily export the data

  • Right click on the chart or visualization that you would like to download

  • Select ‘download as’

  • For Pivot tables specifically, there is an extra step. Once you right click on the pivot table, you select ‘pivot table’ from the drop down and THEN download as (remaining instructions below)

  • Select ‘data’ and click on the hyperlink ‘click here to download your data file’

  • Note that this will export the raw data and not the visualization/formatting

  • To download the actual visualization, you can select the image or pdf options

    • Another call out: if you have a visualization that you would like download as a table instead you would right click – select view data – and then it will flip to table and you can export from there

Bookmarking

  • Bookmarks are shortcuts to a certain set of selections and chart expansions.

  • Once you’ve made your desired selections to your sheet(s) for your bookmark, select the “bookmark" label on the top righthand side of the sheet, select the ‘create new bookmark’ icon and name and create your bookmark.

  • There are two additional options on the create bookmark screen.

    • When ‘Save sheet location’ is turned you will jump to the sheet the bookmark was created on when the bookmark is selected.

    • When ‘Save layout’ is turned on the bookmark will include the overall layout of the sheet when the bookmark was created. For example, the sorting and presentation of charts.

    • To share a bookmark, you will need to publish the bookmark first. You will do this by right clicking and hitting ‘Publish.’ Once you do this, right click again and select ‘Copy Link.’ Once you do this, you can send the bookmark to whoever you need.

  • To access a bookmark, you can either:

    • Select ‘bookmarks’ in the tool bar on the app overview page and select your desired bookmark

      • Note: If you saved sheet location you will jump to that sheet. If you did not you will need to navigate back to sheets to pick your desired starting point.

      • Select the bookmark icon on the top righthand side of a sheet.
