Ribbon Relocated to a Left-Side Navigation

Summary / TL:DR: This article will look at the new location for the ribbon and some of the new features within.

Where is the Ribbon located now?

The top-of-view Advantage ribbon has been relocated to a left-side navigation (still referred to as a “ribbon”). This is more consistent with the approach taken by other current software packages and should feel more familiar to users. In addition, an auto-collapse feature (pin/unpin) for the side ribbon frees up vertical space across the page, reducing the user’s need to scroll.

  • As you open successive Advantage views, the system preserves these as tabs across the top of your session. You can then easily move back and forth between recently used views.

  • You can mark views as “Favorites,” which saves them to a group on the ribbon for quick access.

  • Changes to theming options have increased the opportunities for text contrast on the screen, leading to overall improved readability. This includes an optional “dark mode” for maximum contrast effect.

  • Numerous changes and improvements have been made to the layout and spacing. The goal was to reduce…and if possible, eliminate…the user’s need to scroll horizontally within the application.

When you access the application, it will open in your default browser. As of this writing, Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome are supported for the Advantage web UI. Support for additional browsers is planned for a future date. A representative Advantage web UI view:

You can pin/unpin the ribbon via the icon (as well as collapse/expand the display of the individual ribbon groups). Unpinning the ribbon frees up additional space across the page, which expands the display space available and reduces the amount of horizontal scrolling required of the user---or, depending on your display, eliminates this need altogether.

The navigation tool is still referred to as the “ribbon,” with ribbon design and customization occurring at the existing CDSRBN and CDSRBC views.

The control to change the current ribbon has been moved from the main application menu to an action on the ribbon Preferences group.

Please also note the following:

  • Ribbon commands that were formerly on submenus are now “promoted” to be part of the group.

  • Clients may need to redesign their ribbons to avoid ribbons that are too tall.

  • The “Menus” distinction no longer exists.

  • The distinction between large and small icons has been removed.

“Recent Views” Tabs

As you open successive Advantage views, the system now tracks and displays these as tabs across the top of the main display. This allows for quick navigation back and forth from view to view.

If you exceed the allotted display space for the tabs, the UI offers a list of the overflow tabs via the “three vertical dots” icon at the right of your display.

Favorite Views

In addition to the tabs that track recently visited views, another quick navigation aid is the Favorites web UI feature. (This replaces the “My Views” control that was previously available on the left-hand side of the application display.)

If you have a set of Advantage views that you use frequently, you can mark them as Favorites in your area of the software. To mark a view as a favorite, click on the star next to the Advantage view name.

You are prompted for the icon to use in displaying this as a “favorite.” Clicking on Change opens an extensive library of available icons.

As you add favorite views, they are recorded in the Favorites group on your ribbon.

Theming and Dark Mode

The Advantage web UI offers a number of built-in skin choices for theming purposes (Sky, Khaki, Pumpkin, etc.). A separate control enables a dark mode for each skin. You may find dark mode preferable for the degree of contrast it offers.

Wrap up

You should now be familiar with the new positioning of the ribbon as well as some of the new features within.
