Summary / TL:DR: This page will provide a how-to guide on handling block removal/unblock requests, with detailed information about different types of blocks.

...

So, you’ve been blocked…

Blocklists (fka “blacklists”) are a method used by security specialists to ensure malicious users aren’t exploiting their systems. In the email world, that means (for the most part) protecting their users and their infrastructure from spam, phishing, malware and other types of attacks. For marketers, that could mean something’s gone wrong with your list or your campaign.

But landing on a blocklist isn’t the end of the world – often, it’s as simple as an email or form submission once the root cause is identified and fixed.

So, you’ve been blocked…

If you’ve gotten an alert, received an email about a listing, or noticed in your mailing stats that delivery is down, you’ve come to the right place. With the tools available on this page, you’ll be able to get that block removed expeditiously.

As always, feel free to

submit a JSD ticket to the Deliverability team if you have any questions or require any assistance.

Cloudmark Blocks

Cloudmark is a service provided by Proofpoint to help service providers protect their email networks from abuse and spam.

From their website:

Cloudmark Sender Intelligence™ (CSI) is a comprehensive global sender monitoring and analysis system that delivers timely and accurate reputation on good, bad, and suspect senders. CSI uses real-time data from Cloudmark's Global Threat Network™ system to create the industry's most comprehensive sender reputation service.

If you believe the reputation of your IP address is not correct or if the reputation has changed, you may request a reset of all related email traffic statistics within CSI for your IP address.

Please note this is not a portal for submitting complaints regarding content based spam signatures. Those requests must be directed at the service provider who is blocking the message. This portal will only accept statistical reset requests for IP addresses published by Cloudmark Sender Intelligence.

If you find your mail is being blocked by Cloudmark CSI, the following form is used to submit a mitigation request: https://csi.cloudmark.com/en/reset/

Information needed to submit request:

  • Contact Name

  • Title

  • Company

  • Email Address

  • Phone Number

  • IP address being blocked

  • Domain name that the IP represents

  • Exact SMTP error string received

  • Comment (any additional info, context, etc to ensure reset is successful)

Clients should

...

submit a JSD ticket to the Deliverability team to ensure proper mitigation.

Invaluement / IVMURI

Listing in the Invaluement URI list (a domain blocklist) indicates that your domain has been found within the clickable links in the body of unsolicited emails by the Invaluement team.

We recommend determining where/how the domain was used, and how it could be seen as spam in the eyes of Invaluement to prevent the listing from repeating.

  • Is the domain used only in internal mail?

  • Is the domain used only in external mail?

  • Has anything been added or changed on this domain recently?

    1. Email template

    2. Offer

    3. Sender name, email, etc

    4. Anything else?

  • Has any data – lists, third-party data, etc – changed recently?

For Delisting Requests, use the following form: https://www.invaluement.com/removal/

Step 1: Enter Domain or IP blocklisted, and verify listing by clicking “Check for Listing.”

...

Step 2: If your IP or domain is listed, click Request Removal.

...

Step 3: Send an email to delist@invaluement.com using the subject line provided. In the body of the message provide the following information:

  • Explain why you think this got listed.

  • Explain why you think is should no longer be listed.

  • Provide contact information.

  • Provide how you discovered the listing.

...

Once you receive a reply, verify whether your domain is still listed. If the domain is repeatedly listed and delisted, clients should submit a JSD ticket to the Deliverability team.

Proofpoint Blocks

Proofpoint is a filtering/anti-abuse application used by email providers to protect against malware, spam and other types of abuse. You're most likely to identify Proofpoint as a source of blocks or delays by reading the bounce messages. SMTP Field Manual maintains a list, but the TL;DR is if it says "Proofpoint" in the message, you're dealing with Proofpoint.

The first step to take is to find out if your sending IP has been listed. You can do so by visiting https://ipcheck.proofpoint.com/

Enter the IP address and click the captcha checkbox.

If your IP is listed, clients should

...

submit a JSD ticket to the Deliverability team for mitigation support.

Spamcop Blocks

The SpamCop Blocking List (SCBL) lists IP addresses which have transmitted reported email to SpamCop users. SpamCop, service providers and individual users then use the SCBL to block and filter unwanted email. The SCBL is a fast and automatic list of sites sending reported mail, fueled by a number of sources, including automated reports and SpamCop user submissions. The SCBL is time-based, resulting in quick and automatic delisting of these sites when reports stop.

To verify whether your IP has been added to the SCBL, use the following site: https://www.spamcop.net/bl.shtml

...

If your IP is listed, Spamcop will provide header and trace info to investigate the source of spam and the reason for complaints.

Clients should

submit a JSD ticket to the Deliverability team with any further questions.

URIBL

URIBL is a series of public blocklists used by a variety of anti-spam filtering companies. URIBL has a delisting service available a http://uribl.com , however their list is only used to inform blocklists, not to block mail themselves. Mitigation will have to involve some changes in sending behavior, as well as approaching whichever email provider is blocking the client.

For delisting, clients should reach out to the Deliverability team.

Via their website:

URIBL lists domains that appear in spam, NOT where they were sent from. Our lists are intended to be used with antispam software to help TAG emails as spam. We do not BLOCK. If you are being blocked by someone because you are on our list, take it up with the person blocking you, not us!

Public URIBL Lists:

  • black.uribl.com

    - This lists contains domain names belonging to and used by spammers, including but not restricted to those that appear in URIs found in Unsolicited Bulk and/or Commercial Email (UBE/UCE). This list has a goal of zero False Positives. This zone rebuilds frequently as new data is added.

  • grey.uribl.com

    - This lists contains domains found in UBE/UCE, and possibly honour opt-out requests. It may include ESPs which allow customers to import their recipient lists and may have no control over the subscription methods. This list can and probably will cause False Positives depending on your definition of UBE/UCE. This zone rebuilds several times a day as necessary.

  • red.uribl.com

    - This list contains domains that actively show up in mail flow, are not listed on URIBL black, and are either: being monitored, very young (domain age via whois), or use whois privacy features to protect their identity. This list is automated in nature, so please use at your own risk.

  • white.uribl.com

    - This list contains legit domain names that we do not want to show up on any other URIBL lists. This list is pretty static, with only a handful of changes per day. URIBL white is not currently bitmasked into multi.uribl.com. If you want to query it, you have to send a seperate query. This zone rebuilds as needed.

  • multi.uribl.com

    - Which checks to see if a domain is on any of our lists. This zone rebuilds if any of the above zones are rebuilt, with the exception of white.

To investigate a listing or request delisting, visit URIBL.com and click "lookup URI"

...

Enter one or more URIs into the lookup field. The reverse IP and Trim Host Parts fields should be left as-is, unless you know for certain otherwise.

...

If the URI you've looked up is listed, it will show on the next screen.
